Step 01
“Is it my next most immediate need?”
Recognize your immediate need and determine it is ready to be addressed. Trust that G-d provides for all needs, allowing you to focus on serving Him without undue concern.
Step 02
“Is it really a need?”
Use a chavrusa (study partner) to objectively confirm if the need is genuine or merely a want. Resolve the matter with a halachic ruling (P’sak Halacha) to ensure alignment with Torah principles.
Step 03
“Do I have sufficient trust in G-d that I am prohibited from making any effort (Hishtadlus)?”
Assess if your trust (Bitachon) in G-d is complete. If you feel total tranquility (hashkatas rucho v’libo), no further effort is required—rely fully on G-d’s deliverance.
Step 04
“What is the maximum effort I would exert to get this need met if I were not using Bitachon?”
If trust isn’t 100%, create a detailed plan of actions (Hishtadlus) to address the need as if you were relying solely on your efforts, while keeping trust in G-d.
Step 05
“What is the actual amount of effort G-d is requiring of me?”
With your chavrusa, define the appropriate level of effort required—not too much to remove G-d’s role, nor too little to rely on miracles. Finalize this with a halachic ruling.
Step 06
“What are the specific details of my Hishtadlus obligation?
Carry out your Hishtadlus plan exactly as defined. Additional steps are allowed only as follow-up from your initial efforts. Trust G-d to fulfill the need as promised.
